Enrollment in MA Program
Background in the study of Buddhism and/or Japanese
Description
Buddhism, like many religions worldwide, underwent a transformation and redefinition in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries to make it relevant to the modern world. A major contributor to this process was the Japanese scholar and thinker Daisetz Teitarō (D.T.) Suzuki (1870–1966). He wrote extensively on Buddhism in English and Japanese, and his writings were important influences in internationalizing Buddhism (especially in North America and Europe) and for explaining it in a conceptual framework compatible with modern, secular life. This course is a study of Suzuki’s life and writings and their impact on the modernization of Buddhism.
Course objectives
To gain knowledge of the writings of D.T. Suzuki and his importance in the modernization and internationalization of Buddhism in the twentieth century
To use Japanese, where relevant, in the study of Suzuki (if students have sufficient language ability)

Assessment method
Assessment and weighing
The final mark for the course is established by determining the weighted average of the following:
Partial Assessment Weighing
In-class informed participation 15%
Weekly postings of reactions to readings 25%
Final paper 60%
In order to pass the course, students need a passing mark (“voldoende”, i.e. “5.50” or higher) for the course as a whole AND [for a particular part ].
Resit
Only the final paper may be resubmitted.
Inspection and feedback
How and when an exam review will take place will be disclosed together with the publication of the exam results at the latest. If a student requests a review within 30 days after publication of the exam results, an exam review will be organized.
