Description

Starting your studies is not easy! This course will help you get settled at LIACS and shows you how to best approach your studies by practicing effective and efficient study strategies. You are also introduced to several core academic skills, including presenting, collaborating, and writing.

Course Objectives

  • Students get to know the university environment and understand what is expected of them as a student in terms of independence and active participation.

  • Students can apply evidence-based study strategies in the different courses of their program, and are able to evaluate which strategies work best for them.

  • Students are able to apply presentation skills in a group presentation, demonstrating that they are familiar with how to set up a good storyline, deliver a presentation, and make use of supportive tools.

  • Students are able to explain what contributes to good teamwork, can apply this within a group assignment, and can reflect on their role within a team.

  • Students can recognize academic literature and are able to apply this knowledge in finding academic sources in the field of their studies.

  • Students can recognize and apply the academic writing style in a paper on the topic of the field of their studies, demonstrating that they can write formally and correctly in a coherent structure, using LaTeX.

  • Students are able to critically evaluate academic sources in the field of their studies by asking critical questions and writing an evaluation.

  • Students are familiar with the policy and regulations on fraud and plagiarism at the university, can recognize how to prevent plagiarism within the different components of their study (coding, writing, collaborating), and can correctly refer to sources in their work.

Timetable

You will find the timetables for all courses and degree programmes of Leiden University in the tool MyTimetable (login). Any teaching activities that you have sucessfully registered for in MyStudymap will automatically be displayed in MyTimetable. Any timetables that you add manually, will be saved and automatically displayed the next time you sign in.

MyTimetable allows you to integrate your timetable with your calendar apps such as Outlook, Google Calendar, Apple Calendar and other calendar apps on your smartphone. Any timetable changes will be automatically synced with your calendar. If you wish, you can also receive an email notification of the change. You can turn notifications on in ‘Settings’ (after login).

Assessment Method

  • The course Studying and Presenting is completed through four assignments on study skills, collaborating and presenting, and writing (two assignments). Each assignment is graded on a scale of 0-10.

  • In order to pass the course, all assignments need to be submitted, and for at least three out of four assignments a 6 or higher needs to be obtained. One assignment can be failed but should receive at least a 4. The final grade is the average over the grades for the four assignments, and should be at least a 6.

  • A non-completed assignment receives a 0.

  • Retake of one failed or missed assignment is allowed if this is necessary in order to pass the course.

Registration

From the academic year 2022-2023 on every student has to register for courses with the new enrollment tool MyStudymap. There are two registration periods per year: registration for the fall semester opens in July and registration for the spring semester opens in December. Please see this page for more information. An exemption is the fall semester for 1st year bachelor students, the student administration will enroll this group.

Please note that it is compulsory to register for every exam and retake. Not being registered for a course means that you are not allowed to participate in the final exam of the course.
