Description
This module provides a general overview of archaeological materials (lithics, ceramics, metal), that are most frequently recovered during archaeological surveys and excavation.
You will get acquainted with the nature and physical properties of different archaeological materials and will acquire a basic understanding of the different production processes through which those artefacts were made.
You will learn to distinguish different materials, identify main artefact forms, and describe key technological features.
Course objectives
Upon completion of the module, students should be able to:
Recognise a range of archaeological materials and artefacts;
Acquire basic knowledge of the physical properties of different materials;
Understand the main production processes of artefacts, e.g. made of pottery, metal and lithics;
Describe artefacts made of these materials from a technological perspective;
Understand the relation between depositional processes, manufacturing technology and ways humans have interacted, shaped and been shaped by the environment.

Assessment method
Theoretical exam (multiple choice orientated) (80%);
Assignments during practicals (pass/fail; 20%).

The final grade is the (weighed) average of the results of both the theory and practical part of the course. Practicals cannot be retaken.

Registration
The Administration Office will register all Archaeology BA1 students for their lectures, tutorials and exams in semester 1 and semester 2.

Remarks
This course is in the same period and with the same groups as the Field School and Exploratory Data Analysis in Archaeology.
Lectures will be in English, practicals may not always be supervised by Dutch-speaking instructors.
