Admission to the Research Master Archaeology programme.
Description
You want to explore and better understand which skills academic scientists use every day. In this course, we will discuss several of these skills and offer you a safe and stimulating environment to practice skills that are at the core of the academic research nowadays.
You will enjoy exercising your curiosity and your creativity. You will prepare for the challenges of communicating your science, and practice science in a team.
Course set-up
Minimally two hours of meetings per week with the instructor, and individual work or teamwork (without the instructor) in between each meeting.
Course objectives
Learning how to structure your discourse and practicing in delivering your scientific message using different formats (e.g. scientific/academic paper, elevator pitch, grant writing) and targeting different academic audiences (within your field, within your discipline and outside your discipline);
Learning how to work individually, but also with the rest of the group, getting to hear and learn from other RMA students from each department of the Faculty (World Archaeology, Archaeological Sciences, Heritage).

Mode of instruction
Flipped classroom: the students gather knowledge before class and evaluate their knowledge during the classes. Hands-on exercises are at the core of each class. The instructor functions as a coach supporting the students, sharing with them her knowledge and >20 years of first-hand experience.
Assessment method
(Weekly) exercises (70%);
Final assignments (30%).
A retake is only possible for the final assignment, and only if all other requirements have been met, including attendance and submission of all assignments.
If the group project receives a fail, it must be improved to the level required for a pass.

The dates of exams and retakes can be found in MyTimetable. The deadlines of papers, essays and assignments are communicated through Brightspace.
The exercises have strict (weekly) deadlines, the final assignment will be submitted two weeks after the end of the course.

Enrolment for all components of your study programme through MyStudymap is mandatory. This applies to both compulsory elements and elective credits. If you are not enrolled, you may not participate.

Remarks
Compulsory attendance. Students can miss no more than one class in a series of seven lectures (14 hrs), and no more than two classes in a series of 14 lectures (28 hrs);
This course will partly take place on campus (block 3) and partly online (block 4).
