Only students who have successfully completed all BA1 Koreastudies courses are eligible for this course.

Description

This course is an elective language course for which students attend an intensive Korean language program at Sogang University in Seoul. This course has significantly higher class hours than other language courses of Korean Studies program and require students to spend a considerable amount of time self-studying for preparation and revision everyday. The course is composed of speaking, listening, reading and writing classes, and students are expected to gain Level 3 proficiency after four hours of classes, 5 days a week for 10 weeks,. Through this study abroad program, students are expected to make substantial and fast progress in linguistic competence (overall proficiency, grammar, lexis, oral-aural skills and fluency), in sociolinguistic competence (sensitivity to social conventions), and in pragmatic competence (functional use of linguistic resources).

*It should be noted that this course is not a compulsory. Students with special circumstances or/and concern for heavy workload or living abroad are advised to consider taking ‘Korean 3’ instead on Leiden campus.

Course objectives

The course objectives are as follows:

  • [Level 3] To be able to understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc.; and

  • [Level 3] To be able to describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes and ambitions, an briefly given reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.

Grade conversion

In order to pass this course, students should obtain level 3 or higher proficiency certificate from Sogang University. The final grade will be processed only when successfully completing level 3 or higher.

Resit

A level 3 resit (grammar and vocabulary, speaking, listening, reading, and writing) is possible at Leiden in January. Students may take a resit for those parts that were insufficient. (The sufficient parts cannot be re-taken.)
