Admission requirements
Same as admission requirements for the BA Art History/BA Arts, Media and Society. Second year students of Art History/Arts, Media and Society have to contact the lecturers of the course if they want to participate in the course.
Description
This course is a hands-on course (not a lecture course) with compulsory attendance. It brings together all BA3 students in the process of writing and publishing the academic student journal Panoramic: The Leiden Art Review. Students will critically evaluate, edit, and format articles submitted by students from the BA Art History and the MA Arts and Culture, and write their own book reviews, the best of which are to be published in our new department journal. This will be done in collaboration with peer reviewers and an editorial board. In the second block the students will sign up for different roles and will work in teams on the various aspects of the publication process, such as design, layout, copy-editing, website editing, promotion, acquisition etc.
Through (guest) lectures students will become familiar with the history, nature, and practice of academic publishing. Students will subsequently use this knowledge when collaborating on the publication of the journal itself. The course therefore strikes a balance between academic and practical knowledge: it provides a deeper understanding of the academic journal, while at the same time allowing the students to acquire and extend skills commonly found in internships in our field.
Course objectives
Students will acquire knowledge about the aims, practices, and history of academic publishing.
Students will acquire hands-on experience of writing, editing, and publishing an issue of a journal.
Students will learn to assess work by others, provide constructive feedback and editing.
Students will learn how to work together in a complex organization of different tasks with a shared timeline of deadlines and decision-making steps.

Mode of instruction
- Seminar
Attendance is compulsory. Students can miss a maximum of two seminars, provided they present a valid reason beforehand. Students who have missed more than two seminars will have to apply to the Board of Examiners in order to obtain permission to further follow and complete the course.

The final mark for the course is established by determining the weighted average. To pass the course, the weighted average of the partial grades must be 5.5 or higher.
Resit
In case of a failing grade for the individual book review (grade below 5.5), the student can submit a new book review.
For the editorial report, a grade between 5 and 5.5 can be compensated for with the individual grade for the book review. In case of a grade below a 5, the individual members of the group will be asked to submit a 3000-word comparative analysis of three academic journals (details will be provided).
In case of failing the peer review, students will be asked to individually submit a 2000-word analysis of an aspect of the process of academic journal publication (details will be provided). This assignment is graded as pass/fail.
Inspection and feedback
How and when an exam review will take place will be disclosed together with the publication of the exam results at the latest. If a student requests a review within 30 days after publication of the exam results, an exam review will have to be organized.
