Admission requirements

Entry requirements for students in the BA Midden-Oostenstudies:
Propedeutic exam and 15 EC trackspecific courses (BA 2/1st semester)

Description

This course offers a series of on-site visits, excursions to various sites of cultural interest and social organizations in Morocco, and a five-day fieldwork trip to a rural area. The excursions give an insight in the layout of modern Moroccan cities, Moroccan universities, libraries, the countryside, museums and the culture of memory, and contemporary art.

Course objectives

  • Developing thorough understanding of Moroccan culture and society

  • Developing research skills, such as observing, interviewing, and taking notes

  • Practicing Moroccan Arabic

Assessment method

Academic integrity

Students are expected to be familiar with Leiden University policies on plagiarism and academic integrity.
Plagiarism will not be tolerated. It is assumed that students' work is their own work with all sources used properly indicated and documented in the text (with quotations and/or citations). Students may not substantially reuse any work they have previously submitted in this or other courses. Minor overlap with previous work is allowed as long as it is duly noted in citation.
Assignment(s) must be submitted to Brightspace through Turnitin, so they can be checked for plagiarism. Submission via email is not accepted.

Assessment:

Weekly reports and final paper: 60%
Participation in excursions: 20%
Interview in Arabic: 20%

Weighing

The final mark for the course is established by determining the weighted average.

Resit

If the final grade is below 5.5, the students have to rewrite the report based on feedback or write an an elaborate extra-weekly report.

Inspection and feedback

If a student requests a review within 30 days after publication of the final results, a review will have to be organized.
