Successful completion of Introduction to Buddhism or equivalent academic study of Buddhism, or consent of the instructor

Description

We will explore a survey of the history and practice of Buddhism in South and South East Asia, both in the historical past and in more recent times, utilizing a few primary sources in translation as well as secondary studies, including anthropological works.

Course objectives

This course offers a historical framework for Indian Buddhism in its spread within India and too Sri Lanka, and the Northwest, as well as then further onward to South East Asia, including Burma, Thailand, and Indonesia. We will become familiar with this historical background as well as the cultural factors influencing the Buddhist traditions of these diverse regions..

Lecture and seminar discussion.

Assessment method Mid-term and final paper, as well as in-class informed participation and class presentation.

Assessment and weighing

The final mark for the course is established by determining the weighted average of the following:

Partial Assessment Weighing
In-class informed participation 15%
In-class presentation 10%
Mid-term paper 25%
Final paper 50%

In order to pass the course, students need a passing mark (“voldoende”, i.e. “5.50” or higher) for the course as a whole AND [for a particular part].

Resit

Only the papers may be resubmitted.

Inspection and feedback

How and when an exam review will take place will be disclosed together with the publication of the exam results at the latest. If a student requests a review within 30 days after publication of the exam results, an exam review will be organized.
