Admission requirements
Advanced Syntax 1 .
Description
Sentences and phrases can be shortened in many ways, and such shortening -- also called omission or ellipsis -- has to comply with specific rules. In this course we research what can be omitted in a range of languages and language families, and the various analytical proposals about elliptical phenomena. The course will provide the students with a state-of-the-art overview of current research on ellipsis and cover issues currently under debate. We will discuss how to diagnose ellipsis, how ellipsis is licensed and how elliptical material relates to its surroundings (the linguistic or non-linguistic context). Students will have the opportunity to carry out their own research on an ellipsis phenomenon of their choice.
