Artificial Intelligence

2024-2025

Admission requirements

none.

Description

This course provides an introduction to artificial intelligence, starting from the question what AI actually is (which does not have a trivial answer). We aim at obtaining a high level overview and go over the different areas of AI research, including but not limited to search, planning, and learning, up to creativity tools from generative AI and multi-agent systems. We will illustrate many of these with famous success stories as e.g. AlphaGo or AlphaFold.

The course adopts a hands-on approach to playing around with AI algorithms and tools, mostly using Python.

Course objectives

Upon successful completion, students will be able to:

  • understand and differentiate different basic AI approaches

  • apply existing AI tools to new problems/tasks

  • perform experiments with AI tools, report and discuss the results

  • compare different AI based solutions for the same problem (including statistics)

Timetable

You will find the timetables for all courses and degree programmes of Leiden University in the tool MyTimetable (login). Any teaching activities that you have sucessfully registered for in MyStudyMap will automatically be displayed in MyTimeTable. Any timetables that you add manually, will be saved and automatically displayed the next time you sign in.

MyTimetable allows you to integrate your timetable with your calendar apps such as Outlook, Google Calendar, Apple Calendar and other calendar apps on your smartphone. Any timetable changes will be automatically synced with your calendar. If you wish, you can also receive an email notification of the change. You can turn notifications on in ‘Settings’ (after login).

For more information, watch the video or go the the 'help-page' in MyTimetable. Please note: Joint Degree students Leiden/Delft have to merge their two different timetables into one. This video explains how to do this.

Mode of instruction

  • lectures

  • in-lecture quizzes

  • group projects (assignments)

  • labs

  • homeworks

The emphasis focusses on lectures/homeworks at the start, then exam, then moves over to assignments.

Assessment method

The course assessment details are as follows:

  • exam 40%

  • 4 group based assignments 50%

  • in-lecture quizzes or homeworks 10%

Group work is an integral part of the course. You will be expected to form a team in the first week of the course and complete the group assignments in your team (team changes are possible but not encouraged).

There will be separate retakes for the exam, and for the assignments. The latter probably not for every single assignment but as an additional assignment (likely single-person based) that can then replace any of the original assignments.

  • students fail the course if the overal grade is below 6.0.

  • the final grade is expressed as a whole or half number between 1.0 and 10.0, including both limits. The result is not to be expressed as a number between 5.0 and 6.0.

  • partial grades, inclusive the exam grade will not be rounded. If partial grades will be communicated, it is possible partial grades are rounded, but unrounded partial grades will be used in the calculation of the final grade. The final grade will be rounded at 0.5 (5.49 will rounded down to a 5 and a 5.5 will be rounded up to a 6.0).

  • Students pass the course if the final grade is 6.0 or higher (5.49 will rounded down to a 5 and a 5.5 will be rounded up to a 6.0).

  • Students who are entitled to more exam/retake time must report to info@sbb.leidenuniv.nl 10 days before the exam/retake takes place.
