Admission requirements
.Introductory (BA-level) courses in phonetics and phonology.
Description
This seminar focuses on phonological variation and how to model it. The different types of phonological variation will be discussed: variation between languages, variation within a language and individual variation. We will see how taking variation into account has led to the renewal of the theoretical models used in linguistics. In the first part, we will look at how representation-based theories account for variation. In the second part, we will focus on the treatment of variation in constraint-based grammars. The course will combine theoretical presentation sessions and concrete case studies from the literature.
Course objectives
The student learns to read scientific literature on phonological variation and modeling.
The student is able to analyze a set of phonological data presenting variation and propose an analysis using the methods presented in class (representation-based, constraint-based or both).
The student knows how to communicate the results of their research orally and in writing.
Timetable
The timetables are available through My Timetable.
