MA Thesis Seminar African Studies

Vak
2024-2025

Admission requirements

Admission to the course is restricted to students enrolled in the MA African Studies who are writing their thesis after having completed the Embedded Research Project in the second semester. The course is a mandatory part of writing the MA thesis.

Description

The Thesis Seminar supports the writing process of students who are writing their MA thesis in African Studies. Theses are written under the individual guidance of an academic supervisor, with whom all relevant agreements about planning and content are made. The Thesis Seminar does not take the place of the supervisor, but provides additional support for the writing process. This seminar helps with starting the writing process and developing focus, processing data from fieldwork, linking the empirical data to the research question, making and executing a realistic working plan, having your work read by others, discussing progress with your peers, and providing orientation on career possibilities after graduation (with Career Service).
The seminar is given by a pool of individual thesis supervisors.

Course objectives

By the end of the course, students are able to:

  • Process their empirical data into an academic argument, leading to an academic thesis or multi-modal product.

  • Write in a structured, coherent academic manner.

  • Reflect on their writing process and identify bottlenecks.

  • Have a realistic working plan for their thesis in time.

  • Give and receive feedback.

  • Reflect on feedback received and defend their choices.
