Description
Workshops and conferences play a vital role in academic discourse, offering platforms to exchange knowledge, present findings and build professional networks. As the Research Master’s programme is intended as a first step towards an academic career, participating in academic events is a component of both the first and the second year.
Course objectives
By the end of Conferences and Workshops (ARCHON) Year 1 and Conferences and Workshops (ARCHON) Year 2, students are expected to meet at least six of the following learning objectives:
- Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of current debates, methods, and approaches in archaeology as presented during academic events.
- Critically evaluate ongoing research in relation to context, applicability, and disciplinary background.
- Identify how conference themes and individual presentations align with or challenge their own research interests.
- Formulate and articulate structured, insightful questions during academic discussions.
- Engage confidently in scholarly dialogue with national and international researchers.
- Expand their academic and professional network through active participation.
- Reflect critically on their learning experience in written form, drawing connections between event content and personal research.
- Develop skills in organizing academic activities by participating in or initiating workshops.
- Demonstrate the ability to integrate insights gained from events into their broader research trajectory and thesis development.
Course set up:
Tailor-made approach
This course is individually tailored to align with your research interests. We advise you to discuss with your supervisor which conference or workshop best suits your research trajectory.
At the beginning of each semester there is a general introductory meeting. This meeting is organized by the course coordinator and ARCHON.
ARCHON activities
ARCHON is the Dutch inter-university research and graduate school for archaeology. Member institutions include the University of Amsterdam, VU, University of Groningen, Leiden University, and the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands. ARCHON provides a diverse programme of academic activities. For their current calendar and details, please visit archonline.nl.
ARCHON workshops are free of charge and offer the opportunity to meet RMA students and PhD students from other universities.
Non-ARCHON academic activities
Although ARCHON is the preferred partner, you may also attend relevant academic activities outside of ARCHON. These activities must be:
1) Relevant for your RMA study plan
2) Pre-approved by your supervisor via email
3) Self-funded, as additional costs are not covered by the faculty

Workshops;
Conferences.
Assessment method
This course is graded on a pass/fail basis.
If participating in ARCHON activities:
Submit reflection reports to ARCHON directly, following their guidelines
Reports will be reviewed by event organizers and the ARCHON secretary
Once approved, ARCHON will issue a certificate which must be uploaded to Brightspace
The course coordinator will inform the Onderwijsbureau
If participating in non-ARCHON activities:
Obtain prior approval from your supervisor via email
Submit your reflection report via Brightspace, following the instructions provided on Brightspace
Reports will be reviewed by the course coordinator and your supervisor, be aware that your report may be shared with the event organizer for verification
Once approved, the course coordinator will inform the Onderwijsbureau.
The submissions will be reviewed at the end of each semester (end of January (for Semester 1) and early July (for Semester 2).
Assessment deadlines
ARCHON activities: Reflection reports must be submitted no later than one month after the event.
Non-ARCHON activities: Reflection reports have to be submitted no later than one month after the attended activity.
There is a reminder set in Brightspace at the end of each Block.

Registration
Students are required to register themselves for all components of a course, including lectures, tutorials, practicals, exams, and resits through MyStudymap. This applies to both compulsory elements and elective credits. If you are not enrolled, you may not participate.
