Admission requirements
Taalvaardigheid Spaans taalvaardigheid niveau 1 is required for this course.
Description
Spaans: Taal in cultuur is an engaging course that will develop your knowledge and understanding of the Spanish language through the exploration of cultural texts such as literature and film. These are carefully chosen to be representative of the most pressing social issues and traumatic colonial legacies in Spanish-speaking Latin America. Small debates are organized on contemporary themes in which students will develop intercultural awareness and practice their Spanish skills (by listening, writing, speaking and reading about a specific topic). Homework will prepare students for their written exams.
Course objectives
The main aim of the course is building knowledge about some of the cultural and social contexts in Spanish America while practicing Spanish.
At the end of the course students will also have improved the following transferable skills:
Oral Communication: Become more confident in delivering presentations, engaging in discussions, and active listening in Spanish.
Written Communication: Write, report, summarize, and express opinions in Spanish clearly, persuasively, and with a good organizational structure.
Collaboration: Commit to teamwork, with active participation, and shared responsibility.
Critical Thinking: Be able to ask insightful questions, challenge their own assumptions, and approach problems analytically.
Intercultural Awareness: Demonstrate understanding of diverse cultural contexts, with the ability to engage respectfully and thoughtfully across cultural differences.
Timetable
The timetables are available through My Timetable.
Mode of instruction
Each week, students will attend a lecture in Spanish focusing on a key topic. The second half of the session is dedicated to practicing Spanish through level-appropriate activities connected to that week’s theme. To encourage critical thinking and oral communication, each of the five units includes a small group debate designed to reinforce vocabulary and ideas in context.
Information about the specific contents for each session will be available on Brightspace.
Please Note: Attending all lectures and seminar sessions is compulsory. Missing more than 2 sessions will result in a potential lowering of your exams. If you get ill, please make sure to contact your lecturer before the class.
