Description
The problem of digital crime goes far beyond the crimes committed on the Internet: nowadays, almost all crime can leave digital traces. The development of information technologies creates unique opportunities for criminal activities, and policymakers are always chasing a moving target as they try to bring policies and laws up to speed to address new online threats. This course explores the issue of Digital Crime by examining what digital crime is, how it fits into existing frameworks and understandings of crime, as well as who the victims and offenders are. The course will also explore legal frameworks and other national and international efforts to develop solutions to tackle digital crimine. Finally, nobody can expect governments and their agencies to fight digital crime alone, which is why the role of private industry and other stakeholders in digital crime is also explored.
A critical review of existing knowledge and research is essential for making informed policy decisions to address the problem of digital crime. The course, therefore, focuses on the research skill of critical evaluation. This skill is concerned with the critical evaluation of the production, utilization, and/or impact of knowledge. Students may encounter questions such as: are outcomes, claims, and conclusions valid and convincing? Are the conclusions supported with relevant empirical data? Was the methodology sound? What are the assumptions underpinning specific research? How is specific research utilised and what is the impact of research on policy and society?
By critically reviewing existing academic research and applying it to current challenges faced by policymakers, legislators, private industry and other stakeholders in tackling the problem of digital crime, students will acquire comprehensive understanding of this complex phenomenon, related problems and possible solutions. Students will learn from academic literature and policy documents, reports and case studies. In addition to lectures, the course will employ interactive learning and group discussions combined with individual learning.
Course Objectives
After finalising this course, students will be able to:
- Critically assess how knowledge in the field of digital crime is produced and appraise the utilisation and impact of that knowledge;
- Understand the main methodological, theoretical and conceptual approaches taken in the study of digital crime;
- Understand, based on advanced and comprehensive knowledge, the challenges related to digital crime and solutions to tackle this problem;
- Apply existing academic research, concepts and common methodologies to real-life cases of digital crime and its developments;
- Critically assess policy and legal frameworks to tackle digital crime from a conceptual and methodological point of view and reflect on related normative issues and possible side effects of these frameworks;
- Build, present and defend well-grounded arguments in oral discussions about the problem of digital crime and possible solutions to tackle it;
- Self-evaluate and reflect after interactive in-class work and individual assignments.

Mode of Instruction
The mode of instruction comprises of a combination of interactive lectures and activating workgroups (two sessions per week). In the lectures, students will learn the key principles of research, and the relevant concepts and methodologies. In the workgroups, students will practise research design and methods by applying the concepts, testing theories, and analysing empirical material.
Attendance is not mandatory, but highly recommended in order to pass the course. Active participation during the sessions therefore is strongly recommended to pass this course.

In this 10 ects course, we will focus on the research skill assignment that is going to be part of your portfolio. Specific information on the portfolio assignment and the intended learning outcomes that are being acquired will be published in the syllabus of this course.
Assessment method
Assessment for this course is based on three assignments:

Grade must be compensated in case of a fail (grade < 5.50)

The calculated overall course grade must be at least 5.50 in order to pass the course. If the calculated overall course grade is lower than 5.50, students are also permitted to resit the 35% essay or the 35% final assignment.
In the case of written assessment methods, the examiner can always initiate a follow-up conversation with the student to establish whether the learning objectives have been met.
Transitional arrangement
Passed partial grades obtained in year 2024-2025 remain valid during year 2025-2026.
