Vak
2025-2026

Admission requirements

This course is only available for students in the BA International Studies programme who have passed Indonesian 1 Beginners and Indonesian 2 Pre-Intermediate. If students have not yet passed Indonesian 3 Intermediate, they are expected to follow that course alongside the Language and Culture in Practice: Indonesian course.

Description

The course Language and Culture in Practice: Indonesian puts into action the linguistic and cultural knowledge and skills students acquired in their Indonesian language acquisition courses. Students will apply their knowledge of Indonesian to authentic texts related to International Studies.

Using a case-study approach, in the first half of the course students will be given information about socio cultural, historical, and linguistical context of Indonesia as a nation-state and the arrival and the role of modern media. It also provides instruction and practice finding and analyzing Indonesian data. In the second half, they will concentrate on creating a portfolio of usable Indonesian data.

The emphasis in this course is on equipping students with the tools for finding, understanding, and working with Indonesian language sources both within International Studies and potentially in their post-university career.

Course objectives

By the end of the course, students will be able to locate written and spoken Indonesian materials that can serve as data or reference for a (research) project in International Studies. They will also gain skills that will allow them to undertake projects involving research in the Indonesian speaking world in workplace settings.

Students will analyze spoken and written Indonesian texts of appropriate level. They will be able to summarize, paraphrase, and evaluate these texts in English.

Timetable

The timetables are available through My Timetable.

Mode of instruction

Seminars

This course is taught in a seminar format, with two-hour seminars led each week by the lecturer. The lecturer will orientate class discussion and will provide some readings to stimulate discussion. However, the emphasis in this course is on the development of practical research skills using Indonesian language sources. A significant proportion of the sessions will therefore take place in a workshop format that give you the opportunity to undertake tasks that will assist you in compiling the portfolio. You do not have assigned readings in this class. However, to ensure the effectiveness of the workshops, you will be asked in many weeks to find and bring material to class.
