Advanced Syntax 1
Description
Fragmentary (subsentential) utterances are around us in all kinds of discourse: we use fragments when responding/answering to questions of all sorts, imperatives and we also make use of them in digital communication, such as instant messages/apps. In this course we research what kind of fragments there are and how their subsentential form allows and delimits their meaning and use and what kind of constraints they have to comply with. The course will provide the students with a state-of-the-art overview of current research and the issues surrounding fragments currently under debate. We will discuss sententialist and non-sententialists apporoaches to fragments, the semantic and formal relation between a fragment and what it responds to in all kinds of conversational moves (responses to questions and declaratives, corrections to statements, etc). Students will have the opportunity to carry out their own research on an fragmentary phenomena of their choice in a language of their choice.
