- This course will replace the course 'Cultures of Exhibiting' per 2026-2027. Students who started their programme in 2024-2025 or earlier, and did not pass Cultures of Exhibiting, have to follow an online version of Cultures of Exhibiting in 2025-2026. Description
In this course, we will study the history and theory of (European) collections and museums. We will look at the development of public and private collections and discuss how societies have understood, classified, collected and displayed objects and knowledge. The course will address the culture of collecting from the Classical to the Enlightenment, and consider the first national and universal museums.
Course objectives
Students learn to distinguish the most important types of collections in various museums, archives, monuments and heritage sites and identify similarities and differences.
Students learn to know why and in what ways individuals and institutions have collected cultural objects and have established heritage collections.
Students acquire basic knowledge of the ways in which heritage collections in the course of time have been made accessible to, and have been used by various audiences.

One final written examination on lectures and readings.
Weighing
The final exam is 100% of the grade.
The final mark for the course is established by determining the weighted average. To pass the course, the weighted average must be 5.5 or higher.
Resit
The exam can be resit if the grade is insufficient (5.5 or lower).
Inspection and feedback
How and when an exam review will take place will be disclosed together with the publication of the exam results at the latest. If a student requests a review within 30 days after publication of the exam results, an exam review will have to be organized.
