Description
This course is about people in organizations. While it might seem like companies thrive when they have the best strategies and technologies; what ultimately defines whether an organization is successful is its people. How people interact, work and collaborate is a complicated social process, and understanding how to manage it is crucial for organizational performance and key to navigating challenges at work. This course provides a solid foundation to the understanding of human factors in organizations. You will learn about leadership and management theories from the Organizational Behavior (OB) and Human Resources (HR) fields that explain how organizations attract; retain; develop; and manage well-performing individuals. You willl learn how to use OB and HR concepts; theories; and models to address organizational issues and apply them in your own professional activities.
In this course; students explore current issues and challenges related to leadership and people management within organizations. The course covers three levels; namely (1) individuals in organizations (e.g. personality motivation), (2) groups and teams (e.g. teamwork, leadership), and (3) organizational analysis (e.g. organizational culture). You will learn to think analytically and critically about the complexities of managing human resources in organizations. You will also learn to look at human resources strategically; as a way to create a competitive advantage for yourself and for organizations.
Course objectives
Students are expected to acquire a clear understanding of the major OB and HRM topics. They will also develop skills that will enable them to apply theories to practical problems in organizations in a critical manner. Upon completion of this course, you should be able to (a) explain how individuals and groups impact the behavior within organizations; (b) critically evaluate organizational practices, and (c) apply theories and concepts to develop strategies for improving individual work performance as well as the performance of teams in organizations. The knowledge and abilities acquired from taking this module should help you as future employees enhance your employment experiences.
By the end of this course; the students will be able to:
- Identify and exemplify individual, group, and organizational factors that impact behaviors and performance within organizational contexts.
- Explain how managers can address these individual, group, and organizational factors.
- Select appropriate action strategies for addressing these factors.
- Design managerial interventions aimed at improvement of individual and group organizational performance.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of managerial interventions.

Assesment method
Your final grade will consist of the following assessment components.
Individual written exam (70%)
Individual assignment (30%)
The written exam is a closed-book exam; consisting of multiple choice and open questions. All chapters and articles mentioned in the syllabus as weekly readings are compulsory. The exam will also cover what is discussed in class.
Partial grades can compensate for each other in passing the course; but a minimum of 5.0 for both the written exam and the individual assignment is required. Both assessment components can be retaken if failed upon a serious attempt.
Rules for the retake of the individual assignment
Only insufficient grades allow for a redo of the individual assignment.
Revised versions will be evaluated with a maximum grade of 6.0.
You are not allowed to miss the deadline without prior permission (that is only granted in special circumstances). Any late submissions result in a failed assignment (1.0) and therefore the course.
You can only partake in a redo of the individual assignment after a serious attempt at the first occasion. Incomplete or draft versions will not be graded.
Students fail the course if any of the partial components (except the exam) that make up the final mark of the course is assessed below 4.0.
Students fail the course if the grade for the (final) exam is assessed below 5.0.
The final grade is expressed as a whole or half number between 1.0 and 10.0; including both limits. The result is not to be expressed as a number between 5.0 and 6.0.
If one of the components of the final mark constitutes a component that assesses attendance or class participation; students cannot take a retake for this component. Therefore, students fail the course if their mark for this component is less than 4.0.
Partial grades; inclusive the exam grade will not be rounded. If partial grades will be communicated; it is possible partial grades are rounded; but unrounded partial grades will be used in the calculation of the final grade. The final grade will be rounded at 0.5 (5.49 will rounded down to a 5 and a 5.5 will be rounded up to a 6.0).
Students pass the course if the final grade is 6.0 or higher (5.49 will rounded down to a 5 and a 5.5 will be rounded up to a 6.0).

Through this platform; you can access the software needed for specific courses in your studies. For some software; your laptop must meet certain system requirements; which will be specified with the software. It is important to install the software before the start of the course.
