Heart failure: Novel insights and potential for future therapy

Vak
2008-2009

Objectives/ aim

To get a good understanding into:

  • the mechanisms by which heart failure develops

  • cellular causes and consequences of heart failure, and the points of action of heart failure therapies

  • multidisciplinary character of heart failure

Content

Period: May 11- May 29

Content of the course:
First week:
the course is devoted to lectures about the biochemical, molecular biological, cell biological and pathophysiological reactions in cardiac overload, all contributing to the clinical syndrome heart failure. Assignments have to be made by the students, which will be discussed during WGs.
Second week:
the pathogenesis of heart failure is brought into relation with established, novel, and future therapies of heart failure, including surgical reshaping therapy, stem cell therapy, and gene (including iRNA) therapy. Assignments have to be made by the students, which will be discussed during WGs. State-of-the-art lectures are given by experts in the field.
Third week: the students, operating as duos, investigate particular aspects of the failing heart, the results of which they present and write down in a review.

This course will particularly work on:
Research competences:
Integrate different biomedical disciplines.
Professional competences:
Commitment, motivation and drive, assertiveness and making a mark

Form of tuition

Plenary seminars, work groups, self study assignments.

Mode of assessment

Written report; oral presentation; student behaviour (motivation, independency, oral reporting, participation in discussion).

Entry requirements/recommended prior knowledge

Recommended prior knowledge:
Internal Regulation-1 and Internal Regulation-2, or equivalent knowledge of physiology obtained through courses elsewhere.
