Heritage Management in a World Context

A series of lectures will explore the various aspects of heritage management and its development from nationalistic roots at the end of the 18th century to current notions of heritage management. These revolve around themes such as European approaches to protection of the heritage, management strategies, World Heritage and heritage tourism, international treaties and organizations, ethical and professional issues and dilemmas in heritage management. Aspects of these themes will be presented by participants in the course and reviewed by other students, followed by discussion.

Ingangseisen

BA degree (or equivalent) in Archaeology or a relevant discipline.
SAP and exchange students: admission after approval by the Graduate School of Archaeology.

Doelstelling

The course is intended to broaden students\’ insights in archaeological heritage management from a global and international perspective.

Leerdoelen

*Understand the development of heritage management in the Netherlands; *The student is able to place the development of heritage management in the Netherlands in an European and global context; *Broadened insight in all aspects and dilemmas of archaeological resource management from a global and international perspective; *Understand issues of public archaeology and archaeological ethics; *Knowledge of various aspects of international heritage management (like protecting, managing, interpreting and experiencing the heritage); *Insight into the diversity of opinions, approaches and stakeholders, and the role of the archaeologist in these; *Insight into the integrated and holistic heritage management; *Insight into current debates in heritage management; *Have a critical view into the current debates; *Is aware of the relation of topics (like protecting, managing, interpreting and experiencing the heritage) to wider debates; *Is able to analyze and discuss literature; *Is able to voice and present one’s own well-argumented opinion; *Is able to express one’s own well-argumented opinion in a paper; *Is able to write reviews within the context of these discussions.

Onderwijsvorm

*Tutorial *Seminars with presentations and discussions by the lecturer and students. Preparatory reading will be required. *Self-study, discussion and reviews (through blackboard)

Toetsing

*Knowledge of literature and insights into current debates, approaches and stakeholders is being assessed by means of the content of a student presentation, handout and written abstract (or through a written paper, see below), and through the quality of the students written review of other student’s presentations on blackboard. *Capacity to prepare presentations and voice argumentative opinions is assessed through the quality of the presentation, the written review and through the contribution to the seminar discussions.

To be evaluated positively, students must have been present and have participated actively in the discussions during the seminars. They must have presented a paper that will be evaluated on presentation, content, and discussion, and handed in a handout and short written abstract (in exceptional circumstances, presentation of a paper may be replaced by a written paper). In addition, students will be assessed on their written review of another student’s presentation on blackboard. ### Literatuur

Students must have read the book by R. Skeates, Debating the Archaeological Heritage, London (Duckworth) 2000 by the beginning of the course. Further reading will be required from G. Fairclough, Harrison R., Jameson Jnr J. H. & J. Schofield (eds.) The Heritage Reader. New York (Routledge) 2008.
