Philology 5: Middle English Literature

A survey of Middle English literature (12th – 14th centuries): Chronicle, religious instruction, romance, lyrical poetry, fable, fabliau, allegory, drama. Texts are read in the original with marginal annotations. The tutorials will concentrate on translation and interpretation of the texts after brief introductions about the literary history of the period and the experimental character of the young literature in the vernacular in its cultural and historical context.

Leerdoelen

Translation of Middle English of different dialects; interpretation of representative texts of the various genres of Middle English literature with reference to the cultural-historical background; oral discussion and written reflection of the subject; dealing with basic secondary sources.

Toetsing

Two essays during the course, in which familiarity with the background must also be evident, and a written examination consisting of an \“unseen\” translation; each contributes for 1/3 to the final mark.
