This course elaborates upon Philology 2. We shall read, study and translate a number of literary and non-literary texts in combination with background literature. As we go along, you will gain a greater insight into a broad spectrum of aspects of the Anglo-Saxon culture which have not yet been discussed in Philology 2, or only in passing.
Topics to be studied with the help of these texts are: feud and reconcilation, hero and/or saint, fact or propaganda, the material culture (archeology and paleography), oral and written historiography. Together these components offer a good starting point for later specialization (M.A.)
