Linguistics: The Phrasal Verb in English

Vak
2008-2009

In this course we will analyse a very productive type of complex verb in English: the phrasal verb (e.g. mix up, throw out, wipe off, close down). We will consider the syntax (separability), the semantics (literal vs. non-literal meaning), the morphology (word formation) and the phonology (stress pattern) of English phrasal verbs, which present a puzzle as to the structural status of phrasal verbs (phrase or word). We will evaluate various theoretical analyses that have been proposed to account for the complex properties of phrasal verbs.
