Urban policy and urban marginality

Vak
2008-2009

One of the most pressing problems that is confronting large American and European cities in the beginning of the 21th century is the growth of large urban areas that are considered to be ‘no go areas’. Called ghetto’s in the United States, ‘banlieus’ in France and ‘probleemwijken’ in the Netherlands, these neighbourhoods seem to have a lot in common. Poverty, long time, almost hereditary, joblessness, crime and an ethnic composition that is markedly different from the rest of society. In this course we will try to compare the recent history of these kind of neighbourhoods. We will look specifically at Chicago and the Bijlmer neighbourhood in Amsterdam. In the case of the Bijlmer, a lot of research will have to take place in the Municipal archive of Amsterdam.
