In 1945 Western Europe stood fractured and exhausted after five years of bloodshed and destruction. Yet within sixty years the countries at the centre of that war had formed an economic and monetary union among themselves. The original six member states had meanwhile swollen to twenty-seven and their achievements had formed an example to countries attempting similar groupings throughout the World. These achievements would have been unthinkable to observers back in 1945. The challenges facing European states, and the degree of success of European integration in solving them, form the core of the series of lectures.
