Various aspects of the linguistic behaviour of /r/ in English will be considered.
Topics will include:
rhotic vs. non-rhotic dialects.
the phonology of non-rhoticity (/r/-deletion or /r/-insertion?) in British and
American accents, from a number of theoretical viewpoints.
sociolinguistics: non-rhoticity on the rise in e.g. Scottish English?
a new realisation of /r/ in British English? The phonetics of labiodental and post-alveolar /r/.
sociolinguistic aspects of the rise of labiodental /r/ in England.
