In het kader van gedeeld onderwijs is dit vak ook een verplicht onderdeel voor de tweedejaars studenten Kunstgeschiedenis onder de code K2TC3a. Ze krijgen voor dit vak 5 ects.
Nederland is weliswaar een klein land, maar het heeft de kunstgeschiedenis desondanks verrijkt met internationaal belangrijke kunstenaars en stijlbewegingen. De themacursus Nederlandse Kunst geeft in dertien hoorcolleges een overzicht van beeldende kunst, architectuur en toegepaste kunst in de Nederlanden vanaf de 15de eeuw tot heden. Karakteristieke aspecten van de Nederlandse kunst en cultuur vormen het uitgangspunt. Aan de hand van chronologisch geordende onderwerpen wordt kunst besproken en geplaatst in een historische en theoretische context. Aan bod komen Vlaamse primitieven als Jan van Eyck en Rogier van der Weyden, belangrijke schilders uit de zestiende eeuw zoals Jeroen Bosch en Pieter Bueghel, de Noordelijke Gouden Eeuw met bijzondere aandacht voor stijl, functie en betekenis in beeldende kunst, de (burgerlijke) wooncultuur van de zeventiende eeuw, en de verschillende gezichten van het modernisme eind 19de – begin twintigste eeuw. Onder dit laatste vallen Vincent van Gogh, architect H.P. Berlage, de Amsterdamse School, De Stijl en Piet Mondriaan, en Cobra. De reeks wordt afgesloten met een bespreking van het wereldbekende contemporain Dutch design.

Deel 2, met de cursuscode DSKGB1 (DSIKGB) omvat de kunstgeschiedenis van de zeventiende eeuw tot en met het modernisme in de twintigste eeuw.
The Netherlands may be a small country, but it has nevertheless made a rich contribution to art history with its internationally renowned artists and stylistic movements. The thirteen lectures of this thematic course on Dutch Art offer an overview of visual art, architecture and applied art in the Netherlands from the 15th century to the present day. The starting point is a number of characteristic aspects of Dutch art and culture. Making use of chronologically ordered objects, we discuss art and place it in its historical and theoretical context. The course covers Flemish primitives such as Jan van Eyck and Rogier van Weyden, important 16th century painters such as Jeroen Bosch and Pieter Brueghel, the Northern Golden Age, paying particular attention to style, function and meaning in visual art, the (bourgeois) domestic culture of the 17th century and the many faces of modernism in the late 19th – early 20th century. This last period covers Vincent van Gogh, architect H.P. Berlage, the Amsterdam School, “De Stijl” and Piet Mondriaan, and Cobra. The series is concluded with a discussion of world-famous Dutch contemporary design.
Part 1, course code DSKGA1 covers the history of art in the 15th and 16th centuries.
Part 2, course code DSKGB1 covers the history of art from the 17th century up to and including modernism in the 20th century.

De cursus geeft een overzicht van de artistieke ontwikkelingen vanaf circa 1400 tot en met de 20ste eeuw en verschillende wetenschappelijke benaderingswijzen van beeldende kunst. Tevens wordt inzicht verworven in de cultuur-historische achtergrond van de beeldende kunst, architectuur en kunstnijverheid van Nederland.
The course offers an overview of artistic developments from approximately 1400 up to and including the 20th century, as well as various academic approaches to visual art. In addition, insight is provided into the cultural-historical background of visual art, architecture and applied art in the Netherlands.

Toetsing
Deel 1 en deel 2 worden apart getoetst aan de hand van een schriftelijk tentamen met vijf open vragen over stijlontwikkeling en karakteristieke eigenschappen van stromingen en werk van beroemde kunstenaars aan de hand van afbeeldingen van schilderijen, architectuur en kunstvoorwerpen uit het materiaal op blackboard
There are separate examinations for Part 1 and Part 2; in both cases, the examination consists of a written test with five open questions concerning style development and the characteristic properties of stylistic movements and the work of famous artists, based on reproductions of paintings, architecture and art objects taken from the materials available on Blackboard.

The course consists of thirteen lectures supported by reading texts and short summaries on Blackboard of the topics covered in the lectures. During the last lecture students are advised on how to prepare for the exam and are provided with information on the type of questions they can expect.
