This course on Dutch art and design will cover the various characteristic aspects of the visual arts and design in the Netherlands from the 15th century to the present. The course is organized chronologically and places the various forms of art in their respective historical and theoretical contexts. Starting with the Flemish Primitives, visual art and Golden Age living culture in the Northern Netherlands the course will continue with the different aspects of modernism in the late 19th and early 20th century. This last part includes readings on Vincent van Gogh, architect H.P. Berlage, the Amsterdam School (of architecture), De Stijl, Piet Mondriaan and Cobra. Finally the course is concluded with contemporary Dutch design.
