Democracy in the Republic of China (Taiwan)

Vak
2008-2009

During the early 1990s Western media and academe have called Taiwan the first Chinese democracy, not the least in order to increase pressure on mainland China to introduce political reforms. Twenty years later mainland leaders tell their population to look at Taiwan as an example for how bad democracy can be. Both perspectives are of course one-sided, maybe partly wrong, but both express hopes and frustrations about the course Taiwan has taken.

In this course students will get to know the historical process and the current state of Taiwan’s democratization and will learn how to analyze the current political situation from a political science perspective.
