Intellectual history of modern China

Vak
2008-2009

This course provides an introductory overview of key thinkers, debates, and issues in modern Chinese intellectual history starting from the late 1880s up to around ca. 1950. The course will provide a (chronological) survey of modern Chinese intellectual history.
We will focus on the issues of continuity and change in the way Chinese intellectuals and politicians perceived China and the world, formulated their ideas on history and the ideal society, and linked their ideas to practice against the background of the historical and institutional environment in which these ideas arose and which they tried to influence and shape.
