Fieldwork (optional)

Vak
2008-2009

The preparation of the thesis often involves specific (archaeological, historical and / or ethnographic) research in the area of interest, in specific museums, collections, archives, libraries and / or communities. After obtaining permission for their plans from the thesis supervisors, students will have to prepare this practical work in a professional manner (including the necessary methodical-technical know-how, language fluency, medical precautions etc.). The fieldwork may be realized, for example, in close connection with the department’s projects: excavations in the Caribbean or iconographical – historical – ethnographic research in Mesoamerica. But students may – after consultation with their thesis supervisors – also contact other field projects or plan semi-independent research. In all cases the fieldwork should be of an advanced level and add a substantial new experience to the study program (i.e. not just repeat or apply basic skills from the BA level).
