Iconography of Ancient West-Asia

The course starts with a theoretical introduction about the subject, and is followed by active reading of the required literature. Thus the student develops a view of the possibilities and limits of iconographic and iconological analyses of pictorial material from Mesopotamia, Syria and Anatolia. Also the social position and function of pictorial material will be dealt with.

Ingangseisen

BA degree (or equivalent) in Archaeology or a relevant discipline.
SAP and exchange students: admission after approval by the Graduate School of Archaeology.
A basic knowledge of West-Asiatic archaeology.

Leerdoelen

*Has knowledge of the most important style periods and their distinctive characteristics; *Is aware of and can critically view the function and value of iconographic analyses in archaeology; *Is able to critically analyze an iconographic /iconological study *Is able to critically use and apply theoretical approaches of iconology on a case study; *Is able to voice his/her own well argumented opinion on iconology in discussion with colleagues, in a presentation and in a essay; *Is able to critically assess the different presentations; *Is able to write an analytical essay on this subject, with expression of a critically assessment of the literature and one’s own well-argumented opinion, making use of the feedback received with the presentation.

Toetsing

Partially an exam, partially an essay (based on the ppt presentation).
