Diplomacy Today: Theory and Practice

Vak
2008-2009

Description

This course can be seen as an introduction in diplomacy. Students are encouraged to reflect on the practice as well as theoretical aspects of diplomacy – arguably the engine room of international politics. They will examine the evolution of modern diplomatic practice and some of the innovations meant to adapt diplomatic practice to a fast-changing international environment. The study of diplomacy is neglected in most IR curricula. Diplomatic studies, i.e. the study of the institutions and processes by which states and others represent themselves and their interests to one another, is a field that aspires to tackling this state of affairs. It is a truism to say that the way in which states are dealing with one another has changed rapidly. Understanding diplomatic processes in an increasingly complex international network environment is however a challenge. The evolving functions and modes of diplomacy present a picture that goes far beyond traditional notions of the conduct of international relations. This module will look at the evolution of the institution of diplomacy and the diplomatic machinery’s adaptation to ongoing change. Students will read a selection of the academic literature and be exposed to practitioners’ perspectives on diplomacy.
