Methoden & Technieken I, 2008-2009 - Studiegids

This course will provide an introduction to social science research methods as employed in both academic and applied public administration research. The course consists of six parts. In the first part of the course, we will consider various approaches to research within public administration with attention to several basic questions of philosophy of science and the logic of scientific inquiry. This will be followed by an examination of the role of concepts, hypotheses, and theories in scientific inquiry with special attention to formulating and evaluating researchable questions. The third section of the course will be a survey on the range of data employed in public administration research. The fourth section of the course will provide a preliminary examination of basic techniques of data analysis used in public administration research, topics that will be explored more fully in later courses within the curriculum. Finally, the fifth and by far the longest part of the course will examine a variety of research designs used in public administration research. The course will conclude with a checklist of components with which to evaluate and to conduct academic and applied research in the discipline of public administration.

Class sessions will be devoted to lectures on the several topics described above. Workgroups will be used to explore these topics by either or both examining actual research within public administration and conduction group exercises on academic and applied research issues.

Studiemateriaal

One or more text books – yet to be determined – will be used along with readings provided for on blackboard at the start of the course.

Toetsing

There will be two mid-term exams during the course along with a final exam. The exams will each be worh a third of the final grade. While the examination questions will be posed in English, they can be answered in either English or Nederlands.
