Ancient America, an overview

Overview articles representative of the current state of research in the different fields of study will be critically analyzed by the participants and discussed during the seminar sessions. Although a tutor will lead the discussion, active input by the participants is required, and will be the main evaluating tool for obtaining the ECTS credits. Participation will be channeled through short summaries of an article presented by a participant, and then by going through the argumentation and contenct of the article. Enhancing knowledge regarding culture specific information, as well as creating an overview of developments in methodology in current indigenous American studies, are goals of this course.

At the end of the semester, the participating student will be able to place his/her research data in a Caribbean, mesoamerican, or South American cultural context, and compare issues in the relevant field of study to the approach applied during the research, leading to a theses at the end of the academic year. The course will finish with a written examination.

Literatuur

Different publications, which in part will be assigned during the class and in part have to be identified by the students themselves (library/internet search).

Toetsing

Active participation with presentations written assignments and written examination (see also course objectives).
