Government and Politics of East Asia

Vak
2008-2009

Description

This course provides a comprehensive guide to the study of government and politics of East Asia, with a focus on China. Exploring in depth a variety of themes, this course starts with overviews of both theoretical and empirical trends in the study of East Asian politics and international relations. We pay close attention to such important issues as democratisation, decision-making studies, regional security, foreign policy analysis, domestic-international linkages, economic integration and regionalism.

Discussion topics include major regional players, such as China, Japan, Korea, Russia, and the United States. We also examine two flashpoints in the region – the Korea Peninsula and dynamics across the Taiwan Strait. After a general survey study of the overall picture of government and politics of East Asia, we will focus on China analysing future directions of Chinese politics and foreign policy, and its global impact. This is especially important in light of the much-watched trends in the rise of China.

This course is a combination of instructor’s lecture, PowerPoint presentation, DVD/video, debates, and discussions. In providing an analytical framework for understanding contemporary East Asian/Chinese politics and international relations, this seminar introduces a variety of perspectives and analyses significant controversies as a way of participating in policy debates in the field. At the same time, it provides the necessary background to comprehend the nature and future trends of Chinese politics and East Asian international relations.
