Allogeneic transplantation and immunotherapy: From bench to bedside

Vak
2008-2009

Objectives/ aim To get a good understanding into:

  • allogeneic stemcell transplantation as treatment for hematological malignancies

  • the use of allogeneic immunoreactivity to treat patients with hematological relapse of their malignancy.

Content

Period: Sept 22- Oct 17

The course is divided into five topics, every topic consists of seminars given by experts in the field, self-study assignments based on these seminars and a selection of recent published publications. All students attend to all topics. During the course students will give oral presentations on the topics of their self-study assignment. During the course, students visit one of the two different clinical departments and the diagnostic and research laboratories of the Department of Hematology, for one day each.
The five topics are:

  • Different hematological diseases, as well as treatment modalities and monitoring of hematological malignancies.

  • Alloimmunity; beneficial and complications of alloreactivity, characterization of alloreactive T cells.

  • Immune cell and leukemic cell interactions; resistance of leukemic cells, donor selection and graft versus host disease.

  • Preclinical models of targeted therapy of hematological malignancies.

  • Clinical application and development to anti-tumor therapies; in vitro selection and generation of antigen specific T cells, TCR gene transfer.

This course will particularly work on:
Research competences:
Choosing appropriate techniques, relate experimental results to those of others, defining a research question.

Professional competences:
Collaborating with peers, commitment, motivation and drive, reflecting on personal actions, digesting other people’s opinions, respecting the rules of the group.

Form of tuition

Plenary sessions, self study assignments, work groups, practicals.

Mode of assesment

Oral presentation of assignment; student behaviour (motivation, independency, oral reporting, participation in discussion); various group products which are marked on the basis of consensus; written examination.

Entry requirements/recommended prior knowledge

  • Successful completion of BM321 (How To Write A Research Proposal) not obligatory, but strongly recommended.
