Description
‘The hangman walks alone’, thus Michelangelo was characterized by his rival Raphael. This characterization indicates that even in his own time Michelangelo had a strange reputation, as a man alone with his many talents. In this research seminar we will try to get a clearer view of Michelangelo by studying his multimediality itself, the interrelation of his activities as sculptor, painter, architect and poet; we will discuss existing views on the relations between his various artistic activities, and we will consider whether it is actually helpful to use one of the genres he practiced to understand his works in another genre. An excursion to Florence and Rome will be part of this seminar.
