History of Art and Material Cultural of South, Southeast and East Asia: 'Sharing the tales of the Buddha'

Description

This course examines the visual expressions of Buddhist narratives illustrating the previous lives of the Buddha, his biography, his miracles, and the pilgrimages of Buddhist lay people. Materials studied include reliefs and wall paintings on Buddhist monuments, such as stupas and temples. The visual material comes from South Asia (India, Pakistan), Southeast Asia (Myanmar, Thailand and Indonesia) and China. Topics to be discussed are: image-text relationships; the various modes of visual narration; the relationships between visual narratives and architectural space; the meaningful selection of episodes; the different historical and cultural contexts in which the visual narratives were produced; their inter-cultural relationships and culturally defined differences.

Test method

Threefold: presentations (also on the basis of reading assignments) in the class; participation to the discussion and an essay (minimum extent of main text 5000 words). Students must choose a topic relevant to the content and aims of the course. Delivery of this essay will be expected before a date stipulated 4 weeks after the last course session. Further guidelines will be provided during the progress of the course.
