Blok 1: Sceptici in de aanval (De Haas)
Antieke sceptici trokken genadeloos ten aanval tegen hun tegenstanders. We analyseren 3 aanvallen tegen logische, fysische en ethische “dogma’s”: hoe werkt de argumentatie? Is die formeel geldig? Hoe identificeer je historische tegenstanders die niet bij name genoemd worden? Hoe beoordeel je de geldigheid van argumentatie in het licht van deze historische achtergrond? Studenten geven korte presentaties en zoeken zelf achtergronden bij de discussie in de bibliotheek. In een afrondend paper past de student het geleerde toe op een andere, niet-behandelde tekst uit het sceptische corpus.
Blok 2: Nietzsche’s Jenseits von Gut und Böse (Siemens)
A course on the first two chapters of Nietzsche’s Jenseits von Gut und Böse, focusing on the techniques and resources needed to interpret the key terms and reconstruct the main lines of argumentation of the text against their problem-background. Special attention will be given to Nietzsche’s manner of critique as a form of radical scepticism that includes traditional forms of scepticism among its critical atrgets.

Toetsing
Blok 1:
participatie en mondelinge presentatie (50%);
korte paper over een niet-besproken tekst (50%).
Blok 2:
Assessment will be based on:
a 1-2 page summary of a specific section of the set text, used as the basis for a 15-minute oral presentation (25%);
a 1-2 page report of the class discussion of another student’s presentation (25%);
an oral examination in which students will be given a specific passage of the set text to read, to explain the argument therein, how it fits into the overall arguments/themes of the text, to raise substantive questions or problems in the passage and respond to questions raised by the examiner (50%).
