Child and Adolescent Psychiatry: Introduction

This course extends students’ knowledge of normal and abnormal development from infancy through to adolescence, and simultaneously builds knowledge around the approaches to assessment and intervention for clinical problems arising during this time.

Representative problems covered in the course include:

  • Anxiety

  • Autism

  • Somatoform Disorders

  • Psychosis

  • Attention-deficit / hyperactivity disorder

  • Conduct disorders

  • Eating disorders.

The seminars will be conducted by experts in the topic being addressed, generally psychiatrists, with a strong emphasis on the daily practice within the field of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.

Aim(s)

  • To develop insight into, and comprehension of the current relevant developments within the field of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.

  • To get familiar with the different challenges in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and how they influence clinical decision making and healthcare.

Literature

  • Gillberg, Christopher, Harrington, Richard & Steinhausen, Hans-Christoph. (2006). A clinician’s handbook of “Child and Adolescent Psychiatry” (1st edition, 2006). Cambridge University Press.

Examination

Exam: essay questions regarding literature, discussed topics during lectures and one or two case examples in which a diagnostic or treatment policy has to be formulated. The textbook may be used during the exam.

From January 1, 2006 the Faculty of Social Sciences has instituted the Ephorus system to be used by instructors for the systematic detection of plagiarism in students’ written work. Please see the Additional Rules and Regulations, section 6.

Required conditions for application

Developmental Psychopatholoy (2nd year) or similar course.

Education method(s)

Seminars, each incorporating presentation by an expert in the field.

Application

Enrolment for courses of the second semester will take place from January 18th (10hr) until January 21th (10hr) 2010, via U-TWIST.

NB: Exam and re-exam registration will take place via U-Twist, and will be open between a month and a week before the (re)exam. Students who haven’t registered, cannot participate in the exam.
