Advanced Topics in Biological Underpinnings of Psychopathology

This course consists of a combination of general plenary lectures and smaller interactive seminars. The plenary lectures will cover topics such as brain structure and functioning in relation to psychopathology, biological treatment and psychopharmacology.
In the smaller interactive seminars students will work together on an assignment and prepare an oral presentation on biological aspects of one of the various disorders ranging from:

  • affective disorders

  • schizophrenia

  • ADHD

  • sleeping disorders

  • PTSD

  • or others.

Research Masters may have an added assignment.

Aim(s)

Student should have a basic knowledge about issues relating to the biological aspects of psychopathology and its interaction with the environment. Further a more than basic knowledge of specific issues as specified in the research question to be adressed during the course.

Literature

  • Andreasen, N (2001). Brave new brain, conquering mental illness in the era of the genome. New York: Oxford University Press.

  • Additional literature will be handed out prior or during the course.

Examination

Written essay and presentation of results, multiple choice exam and depending on level and individual possibilities additional tasks.

Application

Introduction and enrollment for courses of the first semester will take place August 27th 2009. Introduction and enrollment for courses of the second semester will take place in January 2010. More information will be available at the website of the Department of Psychology.

NB: Exam and re-exam registration will take place via U-Twist, and will be open between a month and a week before the (re)exam. Students who don’t register, cannot participate in the (re)exam.
