This seminar offers an introduction to the research of the languages, societies and cultures of the Maghreb, from an anthropological, historical as well as a linguistic perspective. The topic for the seminar is chosen every year, for example hagiography, sacral kingship, agriculture, clothes and textiles, trades, law.
In the seminar attention is particularly paid to the methodological aspects of research and use of sources. How do we collect and analyse texts, both in their written and spoken form? What relationships exist between written and oral culture?
An important source is the genre of so-called “etnographic texts”. One of the main points in our approach is the multilignualism of Maghreb societies, with languages such as Standard Arabic, Arabic dialects, Berber languages, French, and Spanish.
Within the framework of this course, students may focus on the Berber languages of the Maghreb and use these as object of study or as source language.
