Social Movements and Social Change in the Middle East

What role ‘social movements’ play in the social and political dynamics of the Middle Eastern countries? How applicable the notion of ‘social movements’ are to the realities of the region? The course focuses on the dynamics of change from below brought about by the activities of ordinary people. We explore the anatomy of collective and non-collective actions, the old and new, reformist and revolutionary movements. The course pays a particular attention to the specificities of politics from below in the region, shaped by the nature of the states and political culture. The role of women, youths, students, urban poor, and religious movements in their drive for change is explored.

The course is intended primarily for MA and MPhil as well as PhD students from the School of the Middle Eastern Studies. However, students from other relevant disciplines in social sciences and humanities may take the course.
