Description
The workshop is intended to examine the evolution of the epistemological status of scientific collections in private and academic botanical gardens during the 18th and19th centuries. In 1793, the establishment of the Museum national d’Histoire Naturelle in Paris marked the beginning of new era for botanical gardens. They turned to educational places showing the diversity of nature to a large public. One of the consequences was the development of new educational collections. Comparing the plant kingdom on show in botanical gardens with the former status of botanical collections in the cabinets of curiosities of the Enlightenment we will be in position to discuss the development of a new aesthetic of scientific knowledge.
An important part of the workshop will take place in the collections of the University: in the botanic garden and in the national herbarium. During the days of the workshop we will refer to the following literature:
