Course objectives

Attachment is the evolutionarily ingrained instinct of every child to seek, in times of fear and stress, the proximity of a person (parent, caregiver) who has comforted that child in the past. This course examines the normal and abnormal development of attachment. Themes include the evolutionary and genetic backgrounds of attachment; and the neurobiological correlates of secure and insecure attachment. Special emphasis is on diagnosing attachment and attachment-related disorders, and on preventive interventions and therapy. We review videotaped child behaviour and discuss implications for research and (clinical) practice.
Achievement levels: 3, 8, 10, 11, 14.

Methods of instruction

Presence obligatory.
In several sessions a recently published research article pertaining to the subject of the session will be discussed, and students are requested to write a research proposal. These activities will be linked to theory and research as presented in the Handbook of Attachment. Students are to review the article before the session. The assignments are part of the evaluation at the end of the course.
