Globalization and European Governance

Vak
2010-2011

Description

Current trends of globalization, e.g. in terms of the liberalization of global communication, trade and capital flows, affect patterns of governance all over the world. Domestic politics, in view of increased globalization, are increasingly constrained in terms of capacities to control national policies. Currently, the European Union (EU) is trying to find answers to challenges of regional governance in both institutional and political-economic terms, by aiming to improve its democratic foundations and legitimacy, and by further integration in the fields of social, economic and monetary policy. In this course, we explore how the EU reacts to challenges of political and economic globalization and in which ways we expect it to develop institutionally in view of the discussion on the European Convention, the Intergovernmental Conference (IGC) and the Lisbon Treaty. The course is based on active student participation.
