Description
The sessions will explore art historical and art theoretical perspectives of contemporary art in China. It will examine both the historical and social-political context in which contemporary art in China emerges during the past 30 years, and look at the conditions of modernity and contemporaneity that accompany the development of art in China, and in relation to the world.
Course Objectives
It is expected that at the end of the sessions students will have a better understanding of the broader art historical, cultural-, and societal- implications of contemporary art in China — moving beyond the popular image that Chinese art has generated internationally, into better understanding of the important position of art in shaping cultural modernity and contemporaneity; both in and beyond China.
