Degree students (including Dutch BA graduates): BA degree (or equivalent) in Archaeology or a relevant discipline.
SAP and Exchange Students: BA degree. Admission only after formal application.
Description
This course is based on class discussions preceded by guided reading for all participants. For each of the sessions which follow the Introductory Session, the class will be asked to study certain chapters of The Blackwell Companion to Archaeology plus additional reading. The sessions will discuss: Integrative Method & Theory; Archaeology & Postmodernity; Archaeology as a Science; Archaeology as Politics; Archaeology & Globalisation, and Archaeology & Society.
Course objectives
Development of in-depth knowledge of the most important issues and debates in current archaeological theory;
Critical view on these issues and debates in current archaeological theory;
Evaluation of the relevance of these issues and debates for his/her own research.

Mode of instruction
At each session the student will present a 600-word commentary on what has been read for that week, and will use this to assist contribution to the debate in class.
Assessment method
The assessment is based on the grading of five weekly short papers and the participation in the discussion.
